WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE?
Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that has no colour, taste or smell. It can be produced by any appliances burning gas, oil, wood, coal and turf.
This includes fires, boilers, gas or oil heaters, hot water heaters, cars, lawn mowers, boat engines, bar-b-q’s and generators. Only electricity is free of carbon monoxide. Poisoning by carbon monoxide can be fatal or cause lasting damage to a person’s health.
It is often misdiagnosed by the medical profession as other illnesses.
Carbon Monoxide, known as CO, if inhaled, it combines with the oxygen carrying hemoglobin of the blood to form ’Carboxyhemoglobin’.
Carbon Monoxide is attracted to the blood over 200 times faster than oxygen and therefore smothers the oxygen in the blood, with the result that, if not diagnosed early enough a person can become seriously ill or die.
Ireland has 40 to 50 people every year that die as a result of carbon monoxide and many thousands suffer ill health from its effects without knowing about it.

Despite warnings this byproduct of combustion kills an estimated 2,000 people (not counting suicide) and sickens 50,000 others in the United States each year.
Small (including unborn) children, those with chronic heart or lung diseases, the elderly and all animals are especially sensitive to the harmful effects of carbon monoxide. They are among those who are least likely to respond correctly to the first signs of exposure. Some victims of carbon monoxide poisoning can experience long-lasting, even permanent, neurological and psychological damage. Recent studies have documented permanent problems that may not show up for months after an apparent recovery.
