Property Letting and Management Franchise - Castle Countrywide

Castle Countrywide Property Letting and Management Franchises! -It's a brave company who would launch a new franchise in the current economic climate in Ireland, but an ever braver company that would launch a property franchise. Yet that is exactly what my client is doing. Having originally established in Ireland 12 years ago as a branch of a UK-based franchise called Castle Estates, providing property lettings and management, they are re-launching the business under the name Castle Countrywide.

We've been working together on the project for the last 12 months having completed a root and branch review. The six existing franchisees remain in the network and their offices are currently being re-branded. Not much of a gamble, really, considering that property lettings and management is truly a recession-proof business. Everyone needs somewhere to live. First-time buyers are struggling to get on the property ladder and Buy-to-Let investment has fuelled demand for lettings services. People choosing or being forced to rent is a reality today. If Castle Countrywide's business was busy in a boom, it can be even busier in a downturn.

Computer Franchises - Computer Troubleshooters Top Tips

The Three Types of Computer Repair Techs: Which One Are You Using?

Here’s what bugs me about our industry – there’s no real certification process.  Anybody who wants to can hang out a sign (or website) that says “Computer Repair” and – presto! You’re officially a computer repair person.  Unlike doctors, lawyers, accountants, HVAC companies, and pretty much any other reputable industry, computer repair is not regulated by anyone so there is a wide range of quality between one computer repair guy and the next.

I thought about this yesterday when I was talking with someone about setting up Computer Troubleshooters in the Philippines.  Like entrepreneurs in most new countries he was telling me how most of the computer repair industry there today is dominated by independent guys who charge very little and whose quality of computer service is very unpredictable.   I told him that here in the US our situation is very similar, and that in fact there are three types of computer repair companies here.  Let’s talk about those three types.

Computer Repair Tech 1: The “Quickie” Techs

First there are what I would call the “quickie” techs.  These are usually (but not always) the computer repair services you find inside large stores.  In many cases these are salespeople who have been trained to perform a handful of rudimentary technical tasks, including “wiping” a machine (removing all software, including the operating system) and reloading it from scratch.   Hopefully if they are doing things correctly they remember to back up your data before they do this, but we do hear horror stories way too often from when they skip this step and critical files, photos, and data is lost forever.

The truth is that there is some merit in the “quickie” approach to computer repair.  It’s easy – you don’t need an expensive, highly experienced technician to do it, so in theory your costs should be lower (though judging by what most big stores charge for computer repair you would not think this was the case).

It’s also predictable – the outcome is the same every time.  This is the one method that is pretty much guaranteed to solve all virus, spyware, data corruption, and other software-based issues.  The downside is that someone (often the customer) must reinstall all their applications again, hope their data was backed up properly, and generally spend way too much time trying to get things back to the way they were before the repair.  But being easy and predictable you can understand why many large department stores choose to go this way.

Computer Repair Tech 2: The “Stumblers”

The second type are what I will call the “stumblers”.  These are the computer repair technicians who have some IT experience, but not as much as they should if they’re going to market themselves as a professional computer service. There is a big market out there for Stumblers because the truth is that about half of what we do is relatively easy and often the same: run a virus scan, remove what you find, reboot, test, move on.

Stumblers are like advanced computer users really, they know some parts of the computer inside and out but usually have some gaps in their knowledge – like maybe they’re great with software, not so good with hardware, or maybe they understand networks just fine but aren’t very comfortable with servers.

I call them Stumblers because they can generally stumble through most computer repair situations and get a satisfactory result – eventually.   It may take them 8 hours of work to accomplish what could be done in 2, or they may wind up with a really complicated work-around because they didn’t really understand something the server is doing.  Stumblers are also likely to suffer from what we call “Nice Guy Syndrome” – that’s when they spend 2 days working on a solution then only charge you for 2 hours, because they know they should have known how to fix it faster.

Computer Repair Tech 3: The Professionals

The third category is a rare breed we call the Professionals.   As you might expect, this is the category of computer repair services which Computer Troubleshooters fits into, as well as a relatively small group of other providers.  How can you tell if you have a Professional Computer Repair partner?   Here are some easy clues:
•         Professionals show up when they promise
•         Professionals fix the problem right the first time, most of the time
•         Professionals recognize that no one knows everything about technology, so they work with a team of IT specialists so that every possible situation is handled as optimally as possible.
•         Professionals don’t just fix problems, they suggest new ways to use technology to improve your business.  In other words, a Professional moves beyond computer repair and into being a true IT Department for your business.
•         Professionals take proactive steps to keep other problems from occurring.  Today this often means using a low-cost monitoring service, similar to what you’d have monitoring your home security system, to watch for signs of impending computer repair issues.

Overheating, hard drive errors, virus infections, security updates missing… these are things that any Professional computer repair partner should be able to monitor for on a low-cost managed services plan (like our BEST Lite plans), to keep big problems from happening in the first place.

So, which are you using?  If your business isn’t using a Professional computer repair partner, then you need to change TODAY.  In today’s competitive business environment you need all the help you can get. Computer Troubleshooters is expanding, across Ireland and around the world.  For information on joining our franchise, see our listing on this site.

Franchise Association Fair Trade Ireland

Franchisee Association leaders for the 2011 CFA Day Forum, they were witness to an important piece of franchising history. For months leading up to the meeting, members of the Fair Franchising subcommittee worked to draft a groundbreaking document, the Universal Franchisee Bill of Rights. Before a conference room of approximately 100 people, the document was read publicly for the first time—by none other than Benjamin Franklin.

The actor depicting the 18th century patriot read each of the Bill’s 12 sections covering such essential points as: Freedom of Association; Good Faith & Fair Dealing; and Fairness in Dispute Resolution.

CFA unveils groundbreaking document at 2011 CFA Forum Day

The document’s preamble reads, “The Universal Franchisee Bill of Rights is a fairness doctrine. It has been developed by franchisees in multiple systems and industries to identify the basic terms of fairness that are missing in their franchise agreements and must be restored to ensure the success and growth of franchise systems.”

CK Patel, a member of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and co-Chairman of the CFA Fair Franchising subcommittee, says the Bill of Rights is an important step forward for franchisees to be able to receive an adequate return on the hard work and hard-earned capital they invest in their businesses.

“This Universal Franchisee Bill of Rights is all about fairness in franchising. It has been developed by franchisees in multiple systems and industries to identify the basic terms of fairness that are missing in their franchise agreements and must be restored to ensure the success and growth of the franchise systems,” said Patel.

As Co-Chairman of the CFA Fair Franchising subcommittee CK and I wanted to be sure the Bill of Rights was written by franchisees to identify in plain terms the imbalance in franchise agreement. CK and I agree that these onerous franchise agreements must be rebalanced to ensure the future success of franchising.

Speakers at this year’s CFA Day Forum included Eric Karp, a Boston franchise attorney. His presentation on the role a franchisee association can play when there is a pending franchisor sale or change of ownership centered on taking the proper steps to position the franchisee association as a stakeholder before the sale occurs. Stakeholders, Karp said, are representative, cohesive, proactive, visible, assertive, resource and responsible.

Attorney Robert Zarco detailed examples of how franchise agreements fail to protect franchisees against such issues as encroachment. It’s “pervasive” in franchising because, “Expansion in a franchise system is how franchisors generate new revenue and that expansion often encroaches on existing franchisees.” Zarco said, “There is an internal conflict of interest and interdependency in the franchisor/franchisee relationship.”

Zarco joined franchisees for their visit to Capitol Hill on the second day of the forum, telling staff members for Massachusetts Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown that franchise agreements are inherently unfair and that franchisees are “seduced and induced” to sign agreements without fully understanding the gaping inequities in the contracts.

While not a legislative document, the Universal Franchisee Bill of Rights (UFBOR) seeks to address those inequities. Franchisees shared the document with members of Congress they visited during the CFA Day Forum. The  UFBOR piece was very well received with the staffers on Capitol Hill.

To date, the CFA and seven franchisee associations:  AAHOA, DDIFO, Independent Hardees Franchisee Association, Independent Organization of Little Caesars Franchisees, Meineke Dealers Association, National Franchisee Association (Burger King) and the North American Association of Subway Franchisees have ratified the Bill of Rights.
